This short story 'New Rose Hotel' from the 'Burning Chrome' short story collection was originally optioned by Malcolm McLaren, with Ed Pressman as producer and Kathryn Bigelow ('Blue Steel', 'Strange Days') attached to direct. Gibson asked fellow author John Shirley to write the script, which went through a number of revisions, at one point changing the setting from future to present and giving the story a happy ending. ¶ After the project lingered on for a while, director Abel Ferrara ('Driller Killer', 'Bad Lieutenant') discoverd the project and asked his long-time partner Zoe Lund ('Bad Lieutenant' scripter) to rewrite the script, once again set in a dark future setting. Finally Ferrara directed 'New Rose Hotel', starring Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe and Asia Argento. ¶ |
